Smithfield Packing Company is recalling almost forty thousand pounds of pork sausage  because they may contain pieces of flexible plastic.

The sausage is marketed under the name "Gwaltney Mild Pork Sausage Roll" produced on January 11, 2013 with a "use by" date of March 12, 2013 and sold as cases marked with case code 78533109741.  Inside the USDA mark of inspection the number "Est. 221-A" is denoted.

The sausage was sold in the following regions and states:

  • Alabama
  • District of Columbia
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • North Carolina
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas

The plastic is believed to be torn pieces of plastic food preparation gloves.  Particles were discovered after the company received complaints from two customers.  No injuries have been reported.
