Oriskany, NY (WIBX) - Congressman Richard Hanna was in Oriskany to tour the Oneida County Jail and meet with corrections officers and inmates.

During the half-hour tour, Hanna saw the both the old and new holding facilities and spoke with Onieda County Sheriff, Rob Maciol.

"Sheriff Maciol is doing a great job," Hanna said. "He's managed to cut over a million dollars in gross costs of operating this jail, simply by being more efficient, looking for places where he could save money and most of that is coming form overtime. So, I think we're lucky to have him."

The sheriff says having the support of the Congressman is important to the success of the jail.

"It's important for everyone to see exactly why it costs $40 million a year to run this place," Maciol said. "[It's] the commitment of the 435 people who work here."

The Oneida County Jail averages about 500 inmates daily, and houses inmates from four counties, including Herkimer, Jefferson and Oswego.
