Congressman Richard Hanna was at the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center today to call on Congress to close the federal loophole that prevents organizations that work with children from gaining access to criminal background checks on employees and volunteers.

The legislation would ensure that youth-serving organizations would have access to FBI fingerprint searches in a timely and affordable manner.

Oneida County Sheriff Rob Maciol says the Child Protection Improvement Act would allow greater access to important information.

Maciol says statistics show that 6% of individuals working in volunteer capacities at youth programs have committed serious crimes.

Senator Charles Schumer has introduced a similar bill in the Senate.
