‘The Newsroom’ Canceled: HBO Officially Renews for Third and Final Season

HBO The Newsroom Final Season 3 Cancelled Aaron Sorkin
HBO

Last week saw HBO delivering updates on its highest-profile series, confirming final seasons for both ‘True Blood‘ and ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ but it seems the TV reaper had one more axe to grind. Aaron Sorkin‘s oft-debated ‘The Newsroom‘ will officially return for a third season, though the coming year will end the Emmy-winning Jeff Daniels drama altogether with a final run.

“‘The Newsroom’ is classic Aaron Sorkin – smart, riveting and thought-provoking,” said HBO president Michael Lombardo of the official renewal, which had been prematurely confirmed by series star Daniels months earlier. “I’m sure this farewell season will be one to remember.” In addition to the somewhat surprising cancellation, HBO revealed that ‘The Newsroom”s final season will premiere in fall 2014, later than its usual summer airdate, likely owing to the schedule conflicts with sereis creator Sorkin that delayed the official renewal in the first place.

The second season itself had also been mired in production problems, as Sorkin told press earlier in the year that the stress of writing had gotten to him somewhat, causing production headaches as he requested costly reshoots of early season episodes that saw the season 2 order reduced to nine hours. The cuts effectively omitted any role comedian Patton Oswalt was to have in the season, while certain other subplots seem to have been lost to continuity issues.

We’re glad to have ‘The Newsroom”s third season sorted out, though we suspect this isn’t the last we’ll hear on the surprise cancellation. What say you? Are you sad to see ‘The Newsroom’ stopping the presses so soon into its run?
