Utica, NY (WIBX) - The American Red Cross is warning of a critical shortage of blood supply and is asking for the public's support at a blood drive hosted by Herkimer County Community College. The event is taking place this Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the College's Alumni Hall, located in Room 217 in the McLaughlin College Center. American Red Cross officials say inclement weather have caused the cancellation of more than 14,000 donations since the start of the year, and the drive this February 16, will replenish blood supply to help patients with serious medical needs.

They say all blood types are needed, but type O negative donors are especially encouraged to donate because they can make the difference between an adequate blood supply and a shortage. Also, individuals as young as 17 years of age who weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in general good health may be eligible to donate at the blood drive. All donors are required to show prove of identification at the time of donation.

To register for the blood drive sponsored by HCCC Student Activities Office, call 315-866-0300, ext. 8286.
