Health Officials Close Pool At Gym After Legionnaires’ Found
NEW YORK (AP) — Health officials have ordered the pool and spa at a Long Island fitness club closed after two cases of Legionnaires' disease were confirmed.
Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/2ihKCwX ) Thursday that the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' was found at the LA Fitness club in Garden City Park. The order for the closings was issued Dec. 30.
Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia caused by bacteria that can live in water. It's not in spread person-to-person contact.
Nassau County Health Department Spokeswoman Mary Ellen Laurain urges anyone who recently used the club's pool or hot tub and who is experiencing a cough, fever or muscle aches to seek medical help.
Health officials say their investigation is ongoing and they can't say how many cases of Legionnaires' are linked to the fitness club.
