I had Heritage Logging remove trees from my property, and as I was chatting with Gerry and his crew, I was amazed to learn about the education and care that goes into their much larger projects.

Gerry has years of experience trimming trees and logging back to when he was a kid, but his first career was in construction. He started logging on the side, doing everything from trimming trees away from power lines to harvesting timber from hunting plots to fund other improvements at a family camp.

His team not only advises you on the value of timber, but what trees need to be removed for safety reasons and the best places for tree stands and other amenities. Harvesting 15 acres might take a day, while harvesting 300 to 600 acres can take three to six months.

The main goal is to preserve the land while maximizing your investment. Here's how he outlined the whole process for logging projects:

1) Heritage Logging establishes a landing where trees can be stored while crews are bucking and selling them. Any needed trails can be carved through the woods in a way that has as little impact on wildlife and the rest of the stand as possible.

2) Heritage Logging cuts and skids trees marked for harvest, starting from the point farthest away from the landing. They use directional felling techniques for safety (and the future health of the stand.

3) At the logging site, the trees are cut into logs using expert knowledge to obtain the best logs out of each tree that can be procured. Log buyers are invited in and prices are negotiated with all efforts given to benefit the landowner. Proceeds of the sale are then divided on a percentage basis between Heritage Logging and the property owner.

4) Heritage Logging also processes any wood suitable for firewood, and then tidy up: They level the trails to remove ruts left by equipment, install water bars to control erosion and cut the remaining treetops into manageable sizes. They clear any debris from the landing, too.

Gerry and his team of four also provide other important services:

  • Emergency tree removal: If a storm knocks over part or all of a tree in your backyard (or onto any of your structures,) his team will remove it safely. They also can provide temporary repairs to any damaged portions until those repairs can be permanently made.
  • Equine logging: This is a very specialized practice, but in some situations, the best method for removing high-quality timber without damaging the surrounding vegetation involves draft animals.
  • Residential tree and stump removal: Whether you need one tree removed or have a dozen or more to remove to make way for a pool or other improvement, Heritage Logging can handle the job. They'll also evaluate the timber to see if it's worth selling it.
