Albany, NY (WIBX) - The Mohawk Valley's Herkimer Diamond is on its way to becoming New York's official state mineral.

In a unanimous vote, the state senate decided to accept the quartz crystal, known for its clarity and diamond shape, for the special designation.

According to the bill's sponsor, Senator James Seward, by choosing the locally found mineral, it will "add to our uniqueness and provide yet another reason for families and tourists to visit, bolstering our local economy."

Last year, the bill was passed by the senate but never acted on by the assembly.

If passed by the Assembly, the Herkimer Diamond will join the ranks of other official objects, which currently includes the official bush (the lilac), reptile (the snapping turtle) and salt water fish (the striped bass).
