Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, Ford, Chevy, Nissan… All these brands claim to sell the best cars on the market, boasting reliability, endurance, speed and the like. But when it comes to what the general public thinks, which of these brands actually lives up to their claim?

According to Harris Interactive’s massive survey of 38,000 adults, Honda and Mercedes are thought to be the best automotive brands selling cars in the United States.

Honda received the highest overall score, with Mercedes topping the list of luxury automakers. Among full line auto companies, Honda was followed by Toyota, Ford, Chevy and Nissan. Ford, which was rated best full-line brand last year, actually increased its overall score from 2011 but was leapfrogged by Honda and Toyota, which increased even more.

It was the second straight year Mercedes was rated top luxury brand, with BMW and Lexus finishing second and third on that list.

Harris ranks automakers on their brand’s health and standing with consumers and the general public. Do you agree with their 2012 findings?
