ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Hillary Clinton will headline the opening day of the New York state Democratic convention.

The former U.S. senator, secretary of state and presidential contender will speak at the gathering Wednesday. The party is meeting for two days this week at Hofstra University on Long Island to nominate candidates for governor, attorney general and other offices up for election this fall.

A spokesman for Clinton says she will endorse Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo's bid for a third term. Cuomo served as federal housing secretary under President Bill Clinton and supported Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. He faces a challenge from the left this year from "Sex and the City" actress and liberal activist Cynthia Nixon.

In a statement, Clinton says New York has led the fight against a "divisive" agenda from "ultra-conservatives" in Washington.
