ONEONTA, N.Y. (AP) — An institute involved in the study of black service members during the Civil War and other conflicts is holding a conference in Oneonta.

The United States Colored Troops Institute for Local History and Family Research was established at Hartwick College in 1998. The institute was initially focused on black soldiers and their white officers during the Civil War, but now studies conflicts from the Revolutionary War through the Korean War.

Institute members will make presentations about their military ancestors at the conference running through Saturday.

The event also will honor the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened recently on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
