Officials at Vernon Downs say they've cancelled racing until later this week after the weekend discovery of a horse carrying a contagious viral disease.

Track officials say one horse was diagnosed Saturday with Equine Herpes Virus-One, a virus that's not transmittable to humans but which can cause respiratory disease in the animal.

The horse has since been put down.

The track will use only horses that were previously stabled there for Thursday's race card and no additional horses will be shipped in or out of Vernon Downs until further notice.
