Marcy, NY (WIBX) - How do you pronounce pshaw?  Call it a public service announcement, or whatever you will, but we have recently learned that most of us pronounce the word incorrectly.

Most of us who have chosen to remain unidentified in a strictly unscientific poll conducted among the Townsquare Media staff located at the Utica/Rome/Marcy offices have discovered that we have been mispronouncing this word for most of our lives.

The word, "used to express irritation, contempt, or disbelief," and meaning, "oh come on," according to the Merriam Webster dictionary, is pronounced as "shaw," as in rhyming with "claw," sans the "p" sound that many of us have previously used.  This renders the pronunciation "pa-SHAW" as incorrect.  Who knew?!

Don't believe us?  Take a listen here:

Somehow the actual pronunciation just doesn't have the same effect.  Pshaw.
