Human Bones Found Near Colonial Battleground Are Decades Old

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say human bones found at a New York construction site near a Colonial American battleground go back decades or longer.

Officials say a skull, jawbone and other bones were found Thursday by a construction crew excavating a vacant lot for a house in the village of Lake George, 55 miles (88 kilometers) north of Albany.

Work was halted Friday as Warren County sheriff's deputies went over the site with the help of David Starbuck, an archaeologist who has excavated 18th century military sites in the area.

Starbuck says the bones appear to be those of an adult male of European origin. He says there were no artifacts in the unmarked grave to indicate when the person died.

Lake George was the scene of several battles during the French and Indian War.
