NYSP: Hunters Charged After Lying About Location Of Accidental Shooting

Brian Snyder, REUTERS

Sangerfield, NY (WIBX) - State police have completed their investigation into accidental shooting in which a hunter was hit by pellets from a shotgun while hunting turkey over the weekend.

Police say 39-year-old James Muscarella shot and killed a turkey, but pellets from his shotgun also struck 40-year-old Shane Stagaman in the face.

Police say the pair lied about where they were hunting when the accident occurred, claiming it happened on state land in the town of Paris, which it actually occurred on private property in Sangerfield.

Both have been charged with making a false written statement to police, and the DEC has charged them with failure to properly tag a turkey.

Investigators say Stagaman was not seriously hurt.
