The Mayor of Ilion is resigning to assume his role as Herkimer County Legislator.

Effective January 1, 2014 John Stephens will take on his new role.  In a letter submitted to the Village Clerk on Thursday, December 19, 2013 Mayor Stephens says:

"It is with much sadness that I author this letter of resignation as Mayor of the Village of Ilion, effective January 1, 2014.  The time has come for me to continue on with my endeavors and represent the village at the county level as a Herkimer County Legislator, District 6.

My time as a member of the Village of Ilion Board of Trustees and Mayor has been an experience that I never dreamed of as a kid.  I had the distinct honor and privilege of being a Trustee, Deputy Mayor and Mayor of the only place I have ever called home.  How cool is that?!

It has been an honor to serve the residents of this great community and I leave knowing that I placed everything I could into the position(s) and for the right reasons.

Thank you to all and on behalf of myself and my family, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!"

Village Trustee Bob Wellington is also stepping down.  A four-member board will remain once his resignation takes effect.  At that time the board will choose an acting mayor who will serve until June.
