Joseph Mihalko said he has been alerted to a potential email scam with messages purporting to be from his predecessor, Richard Blythe.

Mihalko said people have reported receiving emails that make reference to a past due invoice. He said the clerk's office does not send out any bills or invoices after transactions have been completed.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Tuesday, Mihalko said it's unfortunate someone is posing as a current or former county clerk "to scam innocent people" by email.

Mihalko noted the emails may also contain viruses or malware that could cause problems with a person's computer.

Mihalko took office as Broome county clerk last month. He said employees in the clerk's office had not previously heard of this type of fraudulent activity.
