Interstate 5 Bridge in Mount Vernon Washington Collapses into Skagit River

The bridge that carries Interstate 5 over the Skagit River in Northern Washington has collapsed. There were vehicles that fell into the river.

Our sister station in Washington State, KIT, reports:

The Washington State Patrol says the Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River at Mount Vernon has collapsed, dumping vehicles and people into the water.

Trooper Mark Francis said the four-lane bridge collapsed about 7 p.m.

Mount Vernon is located north of Seattle. I-5 is the major north-south highway along the Pacific coast stretching from the Canadian border to the Mexican border near San Diego.

A detour around the segment of collapsed bridge would be to take College Way to the Riverside Drive/Burlington Boulevard bridge just east of Interstate 5 and re-enter the highway at George Hopper Drive.
