Utica Fire officials say an early Monday morning fire at the Kennedy Plaza Apartments has been ruled accidental.

Residents had to evacuate the low rise east building after a fire broke out in the kitchen of a fourth-floor apartment.

According to the occupants, they were cooking on the stove when they stepped out of the kitchen for about 10 minutes.

When they returned, the rear of the stove and the countertop were on fire.

Two adults and three children living in the apartment were able to get out safely.
