Hiroki Kuroda gave up just four hits and a run over seven innings, and Eric Chavez drove in both of New York's runs with one swing, as the Yankees took the first of a three game set, 2-1 over the Orioles in the Bronx.

Kuroda (2-3) threw just 87 pitches while striking out three and walk one.

Chavez smacked a two run homer in the bottom of the second off of Baltimore's Jason Hammel, who fell to 3-1.

For Chavez it was his third big-fly of the year, as he upped his average to .321.

David Robertson struck out the side in the eight, and Mariano Rivera closed the door in the ninth for the fifth save, the Yanks improved to 13-9.

Phil Hughes (1-3) will start for New York on Tuesday night against the O's Brian Matusz (0-3).
