Lake George Among Most Beautiful Lakes in the United States

Lake George is one of the most beautiful lakes in the United States.

Conde Nast Traveler highlighted the top lakes in America and Lake George was the only one in the Northeast to make the list.

"Located at the base of the Adirondack Mountains, Lake George is the epitome of a jet-set summer escape. Since the late 19th century, the spot has been a popular retreat for summer sports enthusiasts, millionaires (John D. Rockefeller), and artists (Georgia O'Keefe). It's easy to see why, especially with all the activities the area offers: hot air balloon rides, drive-in movie theaters, camping, vineyard tours, and art museums among them."

Lake George, nicknamed the Queen of American Lake's, was also voted one of the most beautiful lakes in the U.S. by Oyster.com this summer.

The lake was known as Andia-ta-roc-te, by local Native Americans and was renamed in 1755 for King George.

In 1791, Thomas Jefferson referred to the lake in a letter to his daughter, according to Wikipedia. "Lake George is without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw; formed by a contour of mountains into a basin, finely interspersed with islands, its water limpid as crystal, and the mountain sides covered with rich groves, down to the water-edge: here and there precipices of rock to checker the scene and save it from monotony."

Several famous artists including Martin Johnson Heade, John F. Kensett, E. Charlton Fortune, Frank Vincent DuMond and Georgia O'Keeffe have used Lake George's beauty as their inspiration.
