LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — A cultural center founded more than a century ago as an Adirondack retreat for women factory workers is commemorating the visit of one of America's most famous artists.

The Wiawaka (wee-uh-WAH'-kuh) Center for Women was established in 1903 on Lake George's southeastern shore by the daughter of a New York industrialist. The lakeside property provided affordable vacations for women textile workers in the neighboring upstate cities of Troy and Cohoes.

A wealthy New York couple, Spencer and Katrina Trask, donated the land where Wiawaka was established. They then founded an artists' retreat on the property. Painter Georgia O'Keeffe was there in the summer of 1908, and her Lake George pieces are among some of her best-known artworks.

Wiawaka is celebrating O'Keeffe's stay with a four-day series of tours, live music, lectures and other presentations starting Sunday.
