One of the most iconic inventions of the psychedelic 60's turns 50 years old today. The lava lamp was the invention of Edward Craven Walker who was inspired by an oil and water based ornament at a country inn in Britain.

In September 1963, he established a company, now called Mathmos to research, develop and market the new lava lamp.

To celebrate the lava lamp's 50th birthday, a massive lava lamp will be unveiled at London's Royal Festival Hall and a limited edition model will be released.
