CHATHAM, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say an 81-year-old man has been identified as the victim of a fire that tore through a more than 200-year-old upstate New York home.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says emergency crews responded around 3:15 a.m. Monday to reports of a fire at a home in the rural town of Chatham, 23 miles southeast of Albany.

Deputies say firefighters learned that Larry Shapiro was unable to get out of the burning home and died. Five other people inside the house were able to escape, with two suffering minor injuries. They were treated at an Albany hospital and released.

Officials say the cause of the fire is still being investigated but isn't considered suspicious.

Local media report that the home dated back to the late 18th century.
