PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — A 36-year-old Plattsburgh man has pleaded guilty to five counts of animal abandonment for dumping 24 puppies in the woods around Clinton County.

The Plattsburgh Press-Republican reports that Michael Staley admitted Thursday that he staged a burglary at his wife's Plattsburgh pet shop and then took the puppies and abandoned them.

Nineteen of the puppies were found and have since been adopted.

Staley could get up to two years in jail when he's sentenced on Jan. 23.

His wife, Tammy Staley, pleaded guilty to five counts of animal cruelty on Nov. 7. Those charges stemmed from an inspection of the store that turned up a dead kitten and several others in poor health.
