NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Prosecutors say a 44-year-old man has admitted stabbing an acquaintance to death and hiding his body in a planter in front of his house.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler says in a Facebook post that Christopher Smith of the town of Newburgh pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Monday. Prosecutors say they'll recommend 20 years in state prison when Smith is sentenced Aug. 13.

Hoovler says Smith admitted that in April 2017 he stabbed 50-year-old William McMahon, who had been staying with him.

McMahon's family reported him missing in June. In October, state police investigators found McMahon's body buried in a large planter in front of Smith's house.
