New York State Police say the body of a swimmer has been recovered from a stone quarry on State Route 12 in the Town of Chenango.

Officials say 20 year old Robert Burts of Binghamton was swimming with three friends around 6:15 p.m. July 18 when he disappeared after jumping from a dock to swim to a small island.

The friends told authorities when they got to the island, they turned and found Burts was gone.

Searchers from the New York State Police, Chenango Bridge Fire Department and Broome County Dive Team tried to locate the man in water as deep as 100 feet until 11 p.m. July 18 without success.

Burts’ body was located by a New York State Police Scuba Team unit at 9:18 a.m. July 19.

An autopsy is to be conducted.
