ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A 59-year-old man is dead after police say he was struck and killed when he stepped into the roadway to speak with a tow truck operator in western New York.

State police identified the victim as Charles Valone of the town of Greece. Troopers say Valone's daughter was driving his car Saturday when it stalled on Route 104 in Rochester.

Valone drove his daughter to work, then returned to the car with his wife after a tow truck was called to the scene to remove the vehicle.

Troopers say Valone stepped into the driving lane to speak to the tow truck driver when he was struck and killed by a passing pickup truck.

Police say the driver of the vehicle that hit Valone is cooperating with investigators.

The accident remains under investigation.
