ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A 60-year-old career criminal is heading back to prison for beating a Rochester liquor store owner to death with a wine bottle earlier this year.

Kevin Quander was sentenced Thursday to 36 years to life in state prison for killing 46-year-old Charlotte Lahr inside her liquor store in March.

Prosecutors say Quander demanded money from Lahr at knifepoint, then chase her around the store before using a wine bottle to hit her more than three dozen times. Authorities say he then robbed the store to feed his drug habit.

Quander pleaded guilty in August to first-degree murder and robbery.

Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley called the slaying, caught on the store's surveillance video, one of the most brutal she's ever seen.

At the time of the killing Quander was on parole for a 2007 robbery conviction.
