BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) — A former student at an upstate New York college has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatally stabbing a fellow student earlier this year.

The Press and Sun-Bulletin reports that 20-year-old Michael Roque, of Massapequa, New York, was sentenced Tuesday in a Binghamton court.

Roque pleaded guilty in September to second-degree murder in the April 15 killing of 19-year-old freshman Joao Suoza of Rye Brook, New York. Authorities say Suoza was stabbed multiple times in the bathroom of his dorm room at Binghamton University while his roommates looked on.

Prosecutors say Roque had transferred to the state university to stalk his ex-girlfriend. Authorities the attack on Souza stemmed from Roque's jealousy over the woman.

Roque had tried to withdraw his guilty plea but was denied by a judge.
