BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A 50-year-old western New York man has been sentenced for fatally shooting his mother last year.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office says Wayne Kozak was sentenced Wednesday to 23 years in prison followed by five years of post-incarceration supervision.

Kozak pleaded guilty Oct. 1 to first-degree manslaughter in the killing of 79-year-old Mary Kozak in the town of Eden, just south of Buffalo.

Police responding to a home in Eden found the woman dead from a gunshot wound. Officials say she had been killed with a shotgun.

Wayne Kozak was arrested several hours later at an Erie, Pennsylvania, motel.

Prosecutors haven't publicly discussed a possible motive for the killing.
