UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — Officials say a man suspected of shooting another man in the Mohawk Valley repeatedly pointed a gun at police during a foot chase and was shot by pursuing officers.

Police responded to reports of a dispute in Utica Tuesday night and saw the suspect take off.

Police Chief Mark Williams says the man pointed a handgun multiple times at two pursuing officers. He was shot by an officer in a parking lot near Lansing Street and Belmont Ave. A handgun was found at the scene, police said.

Officials say the officer will be placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

Williams says the victim of the earlier shooting is hospitalized for a non-life-threatening lower body gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered from that scene.

The names of the suspect and the victim haven't been released.
