DEWITT, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities in central New York are looking for two men who fired approximately 10 shots at an Onondaga (ahn-uhn-DAH'-gah) County sheriff's deputy conducting surveillance inside an unmarked police vehicle.

The unidentified officer called in a request for an ambulance immediately following Monday night's shooting near the Springfield Garden Apartments in DeWitt.

The deputy was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for evaluation after the gunmen fled the scene on foot through the complex's parking lot. Police say the officer wasn't wounded in the barrage of gunfire.

Onondaga County sheriff's deputies are searching for the suspects in the area of Caton Drive and Springfield Road with help from a local SWAT team and DeWitt police.

The suspects have been described as two males wearing dark clothing.
