Marcy Man Charged With Vehicular Manslaughter Following Accident

State Police have arrested a Marcy man following a fatal accident in Herkimer County.

The single-vehicle accident happened on Route 5 in Schuyler. An investigation revealed that 24-year-old Ammar Barakat was driving the vehicle when he lost control, hit a snow embankment and then came to rest on its roof after hitting a telephone pole. Barakat was treated at the scene for minor injuries, but his passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

29-year-old Raymond Pinney of Herkimer was killed in the crash and as a result Barakat was arrested and charged with Vehicular Manslaughter in the 2nd degree. It is alleged that Barakat was driving while intoxicated and had a blood alcohol content of 0.12%. Barakat is also facing other charges. He was arraigned in the Town of Frankfort Court and was remanded to the Herkimer County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash, or $30,000 bond.
