Herkimer County, NY (WIBX) - Due to an increase in referrals, the Herkimer County Meals-On-Wheels Program has a waiting list. Mary Scanlon, Director of the Herkimer County Office of the Aging says two meal routes have been affected. She says however, it's not a cause for concern, because the issue has to do with time constraints because the affected areas are in more rural parts of the county, making it tough for drivers to make the 2-hour deadline. "We only have 2-hours from the time meals are prepared in the kitchen, to the last meal-on-wheels is delivered on that lmeal route, so we have some time constraints," Scanlon said.

State Senator James J. Seward says his office is looking into the matter. He said, "Now this is something that as we get into our next budget cycle, next week the governor will be giving us his proposed state budget for the year starting on April 1st, and obviouly we are going to take a look at this once again, [and] try to find some dollars to help meet the needs of the people of the state." In the meantime, Scanlon says anyone can help by either donating their time or money to help the program reach all those on the list. To learn how you can help the Meals-On-Wheels Program, contact, Mary Scanlon at (315) 867-1121.
