New York's state workers are being told that, while they can use the Internet at work for occasional personal use during breaks, the Internet cannot be used for online shopping at work.

MetroSource News is reporting that state employees were issued a memo that states that shopping for personal items is strictly prohibited at all times.  Any state employee found engaging in online shopping or other "inappropriate" Internet use faces possible administrative action.

There is no official word on what prompted the memo, but perhaps the state has taken note of a recent CareerBuilder.com survey.  The results of the poll, released on December 1, 2013, revealed that more than half of all respondents say they plan to do their online holiday shopping while at work.

The survey of more than 2,099 hiring managers and more than 3,900 workers nationwide was conducted online by Harris Interactive© from August 13 to September 6, 2013.  The numbers are slightly higher than last year when 49% said that they planned to do their online shopping at work.
