Mercy Flight Central is expanding into Oneida County.

The not-for-profit critical care air medical service began operations from a new permanent location at Griffiss International Airport in Rome on May 31st.

Mercy Flight held a three-month trial run operation at Griffiss last summer.

“Today we are pleased to announce that Mercy Flight Central is here to stay,” Mercy Flight Central President and CEO Jeff Bartkoski said.  “We are fully staffed and equipped to do what we do best – save lives.”

Along with Oneida County, Mercy Flight's emergency service coverage area will include Herkimer, Madison, Lewis and Hamilton Counties.

The establishment of the new base means 14 new jobs for the area.

Mercy Flight Central is headquartered in Canandaigua and also operates a base in Marcellus.  They perform more than 400 rescue missions a year.
