Utica, NY (WIBX) - Should three Mohawk Valley school districts become one?

The Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk School Districts continue to discuss a proppsed merger between the three districts.

Public meetings on the merger took place on June 6th at Jarvis High School in Mohawk and on July 25th at Herkimer High School.

About 100 residents showed up to both meetings.

Superintendents Cosmo Tangorra (Ilion), Joyce Caputo (Mohawk) and Gary Tutty (Herkimer) highlighted the ways the proposed three-school merger differs from the original four district plan.

The proposed four district merger went down to defeat in January when residents of the Frankfort-Schuyler School District voted no.

Upcoming meetings will take place on August 9th at Ilion High School and August 22nd at Herkimer County Community College.

An advisory referendum, or straw vote will be held on September 12th.

If the referendum is approved, a binding or final vote will take place on October 18th.

If all three communities approve, the merger would take effect July 1st of next year.
