Friday night was 'Metallica Night' at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Giants gave away Metallica trucker hats and invited members of the Bay Area metal band to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the scheduled game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Earlier in the week, Giants' pitcher Barry Zito jammed with Metallica at their headquarters in San Rafael, Calf. in advance of their appearance on Friday.

As you can see in the video above, Metallica frontman James Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett performed 'The Star-Spangled Banner' using only guitars — no vocals — prior to the Giants-Dodgers game. Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and drummer Lars Ulrich did not participate in the performance (getting Ulrich's kit out there might have been a challenge).

Metallica's instrumental version of the national anthem seemed to pump up the AT&T Park crowd quite a bit. It could have used some pyrotechnics at the end, though. Maybe next time.
