The New York Mets' Jacob deGrom was voted the 2014 National League Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writer's Association of America this week.

The 26-year-old right-hander bolstered the Mets' starting rotation with a 9-6 record and brought excitement to Citi Field which was sorely needed after the loss of Matt Harvey - the 2014 ROY candidate who missed the entire year recovering from Tommy John surgery.

DeGrom didn't lead the team in wins, but did lead Mets' starters with a 2.69 ERA. He also struck out 144 batters in 140.1 innings.

Other candidate receiving ROY consideration where Reds center fielder Bill Hamilton and Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong.

It's the first time a Met has won the honor since Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden won it back-to-back in 1983-1984.

In the American League, White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu won ROY honors.

Abreu led all rookies in home runs (36), RBIs (107), hits (176), doubles (35), runs scored (80), OBP (.383), slugging percentage (.581) and OPS (.964), ESPN reports.
