Mets Finalize Deal To Trade R.A. Dickey To The Blue Jays

The New York Mets front office made what I would call a wise decision over the weekend, officially coming to terms with the Toronto Blue Jays to trade recently crowned Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey.

The knuckleballer was one of the Mets best players – obviously, he won the Cy Young – but, instead of signing an aging player to a multi-year deal, or worse, letting him pitch another season and leave without getting anything in the return, this was clearly the move Sandy Alderson needed to make.

It was really an ideal situation. They were able to sell a hot commodity, a pitcher, when there weren’t a lot of arms on the market, and as far as Dickey goes, his stock couldn’t have been higher.

In return, New York gets one of the league’s most promising catching talents – Travis d’Arnaud – and a highly regarded pitching propsect – Noah Syndergaard.

The Mets also received a catcher for the upcoming season in John Buck, and another minor-leaguer in Wuilmer Becerra.

Toronto was also dealt the Mets’ backstop package from last season, starter Josh Thole and his backup Mike Nickeas.

Only time will tell how good – or bad – this deal is, but the Mets don’t have expectations of the playoffs for next year, nor, most likely, the year after that. So, it isn’t like they were gambling a potential title run.

And, at least for now, fans can rest assured knowing the front office is positioning the team for better days in the future with the recent trade, and the deal two seasons ago to give up Carlos Beltran for Zach Wheeler.

They’ve exchanged aging players who were bound to leave the team anyway for young talent that most scouts believe will amount to solid Major League players someday.

We hope!?!?
