Sherrill, NY (WIBX) - Another well known local political figure has decided not to seek re-election.

Democrat Michael Hennessy says he will not seek a fourth-term on the county Board of Legislators due to an ongoing medical issue and his support of term limits.

"To the residents of the 2nd Legislative District, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve the interests of this area. Together, we worked locally to support efforts to reopen Vernon Downs, open a County Clerk's satellite office in Sherrill, provide several job fairs, host a conference on rural issues and numerous town hall meetings were held and attended by federal, state and local officials," Hennessy said in a news release.

"To those turned off by the actions of our politicians, you may be very right in your condemnations, but criticizing from the sidelines will not change anything. Get involved. Political apathy is an incumbent's best friend and contested elections are our best chance for accountable governement," he said.

"Finally, to those who I joined in efforts to create a more fair and equal playing field with the Oneida Indians, that my decision not to run for re-election, is in now way a retreat nor surrender to the values and principles we believe in!", Hennessy's statement read.
