The Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross will honor the City of Utica with its Humanitarian of the Year Award at its 2016 Real Heroes Breakfast at Utica College in May.

Mayor Robert Palmieri, Red Cross officials and members of the Utica Municipal Housing Authority and Utica Fire Department were at Humphrey Gardens Apartments in North Utica today to highlight the partnership between the Red Cross and the City.

Red Cross Executive Director Mallory Scheve says since their Home Fire Preparedness Campaign began in October of 2014, at least 85 lives have been saved across the country, including two in Utica.

The Red Cross campaign is a multi-year effort to reduce the number of fire-related deaths and injuries across the country by 25 percent.  Through the campaign, the Red Cross and its partners have installed over 500 smoke alarms across the Mohawk Valley.

“The American Red Cross is an outstanding organization and the City of Utica is a proud partner of the Home Fire Campaign,” said Palmieri.  “This campaign has saved lives, including two people in our City.  I appreciate and thank the Red Cross for the continued services they provide to individuals in our community.”
