A Utica mother is facing two misdemeanor charges after one of her children is believed to have started a fire at the 6 Nations Apartment Complex.

That's according to a release from Utica fire officials who say a subsequent investigation determined Jazmaire Dejesus, 28, left two children, ages 9 and 6, home alone for an extended period on Thursday. While being unsupervised, they say one of the children found a lighter and set a couch on fire.

Neighbors noticed the fire and were able to get the kids to safety and call 911, officials said.

Dejesus was issued an appearance tickets for two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Utica Fire was able to quickly extinguish the Thursday afternoon fire and no one was hurt. Six people have been temporarily displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
