A mother and her son are facing multiple charges following an incident outside of a local animal shelter.

New York State Police say that Scott K. Schrader of Clinton, believed to be wanted for criminal possession of a controlled substance, was seen outside the Steven Swan Humane Society in Deerfield, New York at 4:42pm on Thursday, April 2, 2015.

At the time he was with his mother, 69-year-old Judith Schrader, also of Clinton.  In a written release troopers say that when they moved "in to make the arrest, J. Schrader attempted to flee by vehicle to avoid the capture of her son.  State Police blocked the vehicle to prevent fleeing."

The 31-year-old Schrader then allegedly resisted arrest and ran off, leading to a foot chase.  When Schrader was caught he is said to have continued to resist arrest.  The Utica Police Department responded as well and helped to secure handcuffs on Schrader.

Both Scott Schrader and the trooper were brought to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered serious.

Schrader has been arraigned in New York Mills Court and sent to the Oneida County Jail on the following charges:

  • Assault (second degree, a felony)
  • Resisting Arrest (misdemeanor)
  • Obstructing Governmental Administration (misdemeanor)
He is being held without bail.
His mother, Judith Schrader, faces a misdemeanor charge of obstructing governmental administration and is scheduled to answer the charge at the Town of Deerfield Court at a future date.
