A New Jersey man is dead after careening off the highway and into the Delaware River in the Town of Hancock.

New York State Police say 37 year old Stephen Maikisch III of Somerset drove off Route 17 west at a high rate of speed May 5 at 5:38 a.m., crossed Harvard Road, hit a guide rail and several trees, traveled about 200 feet from the road and plunged into the river.

His Jeep came to rest, upright fifty feet from the shore and half submerged.

Maikisch’s body was found in the vehicle.

The investigation is continuing and authorities say they are awaiting toxicology test results.
