Five brands of cat and dog food, along with treats, are being recalled because of salmonella.

Natura Pet Products is recalling all dry dog, cat and ferret food with an expiration date of March 24, 2014 or sooner because it has the potential to make pets and humans sick. Pet treats are also being recalled for the same issue.

The salmonella was found during sampling by both the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

Among the brands affected are California Natural, EVO, Healthwise, Innova and Karma. Each is sold nationwide and can be purchased locally at several retailers in Utica and New Hartford, including Peter's Cornucopia, Pet Supplies Plus, K9 Obedience Training and Bath & Doggie Works.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause several symptoms in pets, like vomiting, fever and lethargy.

If you have any of the products mentioned, Natura Pet Products suggests they be thrown out immediately. Products can also be replaced or refunded by calling the company at (800) 224-6123 during normal business hours, or by emailing them on their contact page.
