Nestle Recalling Some Hot Pockets Over Suspect Beef

If you buy Hot Pockets you may need to check your freezer.  Nestle Foods is recalling almost a quarter of a million cases of the food.

Three sizes of Philly Steak and Cheese and Croissant Crust Philly Steak and Cheese in the two-pack box are being recalled.

The voluntary recall is a response to a recall issued last week by Rancho Feeding Corporation.  The company’s beef was allegedly “diseased” and “from unsound cows.”  Although Nestle did not buy the beef directly from Rancho, it believes that some of its vendors have purchased beef and beef items from the company.

The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued the initial recall on February 8, 2014.  The recall was revised on February 14, 2014 to state that the affected product was sent to distribution centers in the following states:

  • California
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Oregon
  • Texas
  • Washington

Note that the product could then find its way to other states upon purchase.  The FSIS stated that Rancho, based in “…Petaluma, (California)… is recalling approximately 8,742,700 pounds, because it processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection. Thus, the products are adulterated, because they are unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food…”

Nestle says the measure does not affect its other products, and notes that there may be more companies coming forward after they determine that they, too, have purchased product from Rancho.

The USDA says they have not received reports of any sickness or health-related issues connected to the recall, and are recalling the beef as a precautionary measure.
