Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a new law that will prohibit the sale of liquid nicotine to minors and require that all packaging be made childproof.

Liquid nicotine or e-liquid is made of nicotine and other chemicals and is highly toxic, even in small doses. If ingested, it may cause tremors, vomiting, seizures, and possibly death.

For infants and children, swallowing the liquid is likely fatal.

A 2014 Centers for Disease Control report says calls to poison control centers involving liquid nicotine rose from one per month in 2010 to 215 in 2014 and more than half of the calls involved children under 5.

New York State banned the sale of e-cigarettes to minors in 2010 but the law didn't expressly ban the sale of liquid nicotine to minors or make packaging childproof.

Earlier this month a one-year-old Fort Plain child died after drinking liquid nicotine at his home.
