BEEKMANTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 72-year-old New Mexico man has drowned while paddle boarding along Lake Champlain's New York shoreline.

State police say troopers responded around 10:15 a.m. Thursday to reports of a drowning off Point Au Roche in the Clinton County town of Beekmantown, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of the Canadian border.

Police say Peter Reed, of Albuquerque, was paddle boarding with a friend about 100 feet from shore when they both fell off their boards. Troopers say neither person was wearing a life jacket.

A shoreline resident spotted them in the water and used his boat to reach them. Troopers say he tossed a life vest to Reed, then went to assist the other person. When they returned to help Reed, he had gone under.

Police found his body about 40 minutes later.
